Ukrainian Officials Say Russia Had Failed Zelensky Assassination

According to a post on the social platform of the Ukrainian Strategic Communications and Information Security Center (SPRAVDI), the head of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Oleksi Danilov claimed at a briefing on March 1, according to the U.S. website Axios. Ukrainian troops have foiled an assassination attempt against the country's President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to Danilov, an elite Chechnya special forces unit called the Kadyrovites had been behind the scenes to assassinate Zelensky, but the plan was subsequently thwarted. "We are well aware that this special operation, launched directly by the Kadyrovites, is to get rid of our president," he said.

Danilov also claimed that the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), which does not support military action against Ukraine, leaked the assassination plot to Ukraine. The Kadyrovites forces involved in the assassination were eventually split in two, with one part being eliminated in Gostomeli and the other "under fire".

Zelensky has claimed he will be the "number one target" for assassinations since Russia began special military operations in eastern Ukraine, the report said. On Thursday, he also warned that a Russian "sabotage group" had entered Kyiv and was looking for him and his family.
